The cowboys ride in

Riding in for the Rodeo
A lot of Texans in Stetsons on horseback and in covered wagons rode into Houston today ahead of the opening of the annual Rodeo tomorrow.

It's an event that brings out a modest crowd here and there, lined up along the main route into town. At around 8.30am the parade of cowboys was due, the members of the parade having spent the night camped in Bear Creek Park (or so I was told). I guess they slept in the wagons, but don't quote me on that.

On a bright, clear, sunny morning with a cold nip in the air, it was a sight to bring on a smile as the cowboys and girls rode their horses and drove their wagons past at a slow pace, waving and calling out to the crowd "How y'all doin'?", adding in the odd "Yee-haw" for good measure.

They had a police escort, the traffic just had to wait and go slowly, queueing up behind the lengthy parade, and the local TV station helicopter hovered overhead.

It was one of those uniquely Texan events which it's good to enjoy and see when in town.
